About the Role:
The British Museum is seeking a Curator of European Modern Collection (1800 to Present) to join the Department of Britain, Europe & Prehistory. The successful candidate will focus on researching, curating, and managing collections related to European history from 1800 to the present. The role requires a deep understanding of European material culture, its historical significance, and its connections to global contexts.
The position involves overseeing a range of objects, including applied arts, ceramics, textiles, Judaica, and artifacts representing traditional communities and colonial histories. The curator will also contribute to new exhibitions as part of the Museum’s Masterplan, focusing on themes of empire, colonialism, and decolonization, and will have the opportunity to expand the collection with contemporary works.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead cross-museum exhibition projects and develop displays based on modern historical contexts.
- Conduct and publish original research on European history and its material culture.
- Integrate traditional, regional, and minority cultures into exhibitions.
- Manage and document collections to a high standard.
- Collaborate with other museum teams on conservation, storage, and display of the collection.
- Expand the collection by acquiring contemporary objects that illustrate today’s history.
About You:
- A degree in a relevant humanities subject such as history, art history, or anthropology.
- Recognized authority in a relevant subject area with a track record of research and publications.
- Fluency in English and knowledge of another European language.
- Experience with curatorial projects, exhibitions, and public speaking.
- Proficiency in digital and social media platforms.
