Description
The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks a highly motivated, experienced curator of European painting and sculpture, specializing in the period between 1500 and 1800. The collection of European paintings and sculpture is of international importance, with particular strengths in Italian and Spanish Baroque painting, 17th-century Northern art, and Renaissance bronzes, making this position an extraordinary opportunity.
The museum is seeking candidates who are eager to lead a distinctive program of exhibitions and programs in alignment with the museum’s priorities. While each candidate will have a particular area of scholarly expertise, we are looking for curators with a wide range of interests and ambitions who will aspire to work within and beyond their area of specialization, and who are eager to reach out to colleagues in other institutions to collaborate on projects. Key responsibilities will also include the interpretation and presentation of the permanent collection; research and publication of the collection; proposing acquisitions; and donor cultivation. Candidates should be skilled at building effective relationships across departments and invested in collaboration and teamwork. The ideal candidate will be sensitive to the enhanced public role of museums today and will strive to communicate with scholarly and general audiences. We particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise and experience working with Italian paintings and sculpture, although we will consider candidates with specializations in other areas.
- Depending upon the successful candidate’s interest and management experience, the Paul J. and Edith Ingalls Vignos Jr. Curator of European Paintings and Sculpture, 1500-1800 may also serve as Chair of European Art from Classical Antiquity to 1800, supervising other curators.
- A Ph.D. in Art History or related field is required. Candidates must have at least ten years of relevant museum experience, including experience organizing exhibitions, publishing scholarly research, and making acquisitions. A full range of benefits accompanies the position.
