Position Objective
The Curator of Global Contemporary Art will advance the museum’s commitment to presenting, acquiring, and promoting a deeper understanding of contemporary art by exploring its connections to art from the past. This role will infuse The Phillips Collection with innovative thinking, embracing diverse global perspectives and engaging with a multitude of transnational, interdisciplinary narratives in 21st-century contemporary art. The Curator will provide thought leadership and a dynamic vision for curatorial programs and initiatives that align with The Phillips Collection’s mission of expanding the canon of contemporary art to include more inclusive narratives that address pressing issues of our time.
The Phillips Collection aims to expand its collection and exhibition program in contemporary LatinX, Latin American, Asian, African, and African diasporic art. The Curator of Global Contemporary Art will contribute to the museum’s mission by acquiring new works and organizing inclusive exhibitions and programs in line with our strategic priorities.
Essential Functions
- Collaborate with the curatorial team and cross-departments on exhibitions, projects, and contemporary art initiatives.
- Develop and execute innovative exhibitions, programs, and initiatives that contribute to the intellectual and artistic landscape of the institution.
- Curate dynamic, inclusive presentations of the permanent collection.
- Collaborate with the chief curator and director to identify acquisitions and cultivate donations to support collection priorities.
- Foster new and strengthen existing relationships with the contemporary art community and organizational partners locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Conduct original research through catalogues, essays, articles, lectures, gallery talks, and web-based media. Participate in art, humanities, and intersectional scholarship conferences and workshops.
- Assist the advancement team in grant writing, proposals, and cultivating prospective donors, collectors, and members.
- Provide supervision and mentorship to fellows, interns, and paid staff as needed.
- Perform additional management and administrative duties as assigned.
- Prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in all aspects of curatorial work.
Requirements
- MA required (or Ph.D.) in Art History or a related academic field.
- Knowledge of modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on global contemporary art.
- Expertise in LatinX, Latin American, or Art of the Americas is desirable.
- Five years or more of curatorial practice, preferably in a museum or cultural institution.
- Strong track record of organizing exhibitions, publishing, and public speaking.
- Enthusiasm for innovative curatorial practices.
- Strong collaborator and community builder.
- Ability to establish positive and effective relationships with artists, members, donors, co-workers, and the broader community.
- Excellent writing, research, speaking, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Outstanding organizational and time management abilities.
- Flexibility to attend evening and weekend events and travel both domestically and internationally.
