Curator of Global Contemporary Art

The Museum is seeking a talented, creative, and motivated individual to continue the extraordinary track record of contemporary Asian exhibitions at the Smart Museum and position the Museum more firmly within a contemporary art world that is cross-geographic and deeply inclusive. The Curator of Global Contemporary Art will partner with the museum director and the rest of the curatorial and education teams to play a key role in the building the future of the Smart Museum.

The Curator of Global Contemporary Art (With a Particular Focus on the Arts of Asia) will assist in the planning, development, and implementation of a vibrant, dynamic global contemporary art program. S/he will assist with the reinstallation of the collection galleries, while establishing and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of scholars, artists, critics, collectors, dealers, and other professional colleagues to advance the Museum’s position as a leader in presenting contemporary global art.

The Curator of Global Contemporary Art will develop his or her own significant exhibitions while also serving as a coordinating curator for borrowed or guest-curated exhibitions. The curator will work closely with faculty, guest curators, and students, and in collaboration with other museum colleagues, to support, encourage, and develop related public programs that strengthen the Museum’s engagement with global contemporary culture. In addition, the curator encourages curricular and co-curricular collaboration with the Departments of Art History, Visual Arts and others whose content expertise aligns with contemporary exhibition projects. With the approval of the Department of Visual Arts and/or Art History, the Humanities Division, and the Provost’s Office, the Curator of Global Contemporary Art may teach up to one quarter-long course per year, often directly related to the Museum’s collection. Reporting to the Dana Feitler Director of the Smart Museum (or her designee), the Global Contemporary Curator works in partnership with the other members of the museum staff and works closely with faculty and other collaborative partners.

About Smart Museum

The Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago (smartmuseum.uchicago.edu), located in one of the nation’s greatest cities for art and on the campus of one of the world’s leading research universities, opens the world through art and ideas. The Smart Museum is widely known for its ambitious exhibitions and programs; its collaborations with scholars and students have animated its collection both historically and conceptually. The Museum plays a central role in the University’s arts initiative, which has brought extraordinary new focus and energy to the arts on campus. At the same time, the Museum collaborates closely with other units on campus as well as institutions and scholars in the city and across the country. Its exhibition projects often arise from partnerships with other institutions and travel nationally and internationally. The Smart Museum is also deeply dedicated to engaging its surrounding communities through programming that offers visitors of all ages a transformative experience involving significant and often unexpected examples of artistic expression. This is an exciting moment to join the Smart Museum, as the Museum is embarking on the creation of a compelling vision for the future under the leadership of a recently appointed Dana Feitler Director.
