The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) seeks a curator to oversee its renowned collection of Indian and Himalayan art, nearly 4,000 works spanning from 2,500 BCE to the present. This endowed role, named in honor of pioneering scholar Stella Kramrisch, plays a central part in advancing research, interpretation, acquisitions, and exhibitions, while engaging diverse audiences and strengthening donor relations.
Responsibilities
- Stewardship of the collection: research, cataloguing, documentation, loans, and provenance.
- Organize and contribute to exhibitions, installations, and publications, including traveling shows.
- Collaborate with colleagues across curatorial, conservation, education, and advancement departments.
- Mentor and support departmental staff, fellows, and project assistants.
- Cultivate and engage donors, collectors, and patrons, including participation in the Asian Art Curatorial Committee.
- Support fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the Advancement team.
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years curatorial experience at a collecting institution.
- Ph.D. preferred; expertise in South Asian or Himalayan art history essential, with broad familiarity in Islamic art desirable.
- Lived experience in region of specialization and proficiency in one or more South Asian languages.
- Proven record of exhibitions, research, publications, and donor engagement.
- Strong project management, budget oversight, and fundraising abilities.
- Excellent written/oral communication and digital proficiency.
