About the Position

The Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) is seeking a Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art during an exciting period as the museum approaches its centennial and prepares for its first purpose-built home, designed in collaboration with the Brooklyn-based architecture firm SO – IL. The new museum will be a dedicated space that fosters a sense of belonging for students, campus members, and the broader community. It will also provide an inclusive experience for all visitors.

Responsibilities

The Curator will report to the Deputy Director for Curatorial Engagement and be an integral part of the museum’s curatorial engagement department. The role involves extensive collaboration within the department and across the college. Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the planning of the new museum building and preparing for its inaugural installations.
  • Planning future collections, exhibitions, and interpretation for the new museum, including associated publications.
  • Assessing and researching the museum’s collection, refining and growing it through acquisitions and strategic deaccessions.
  • Supervising and mentoring curatorial interns and fellows.
  • Participating in campus-wide initiatives and teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses as needed.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in art history, material culture, cultural/global studies, visual anthropology, or a related field. A PhD is preferred. A minimum of seven years of experience working in museums, with a deep knowledge of global modern and contemporary art history, is required. The position also requires a commitment to diversity and inclusion, with experience working in diverse communities.

Familiarity with collection databases and project management software is a plus. The role may be restructured to an Associate Curator position if the selected candidate does not meet all the requirements.

Additional Information

The salary range for this position is $77,000 to $90,000 per year, based on experience. Employment is contingent on the verification of background information, including a criminal record check.

Williams College is committed to diversity and inclusion and provides reasonable accommodations to applicants with disabilities.
