The Search

The Morgan Library & Museum is searching for a skilled curator to fill the position of Acquavella Curator and Department Head of Modern and Contemporary Drawings. This individual will bring a deep appreciation for modern and contemporary art and a strategic vision for the department. The Acquavella Curator will develop exhibitions, publish scholarly research, engage in audience development and fundraising, seek new acquisitions, and make the collection accessible to researchers, students, and the public.

The Morgan Library & Museum: An Overview

Located in the heart of New York City, the Morgan Library & Museum began as financier Pierpont Morgan’s personal collection. It offers visitors an intimate encounter with significant works of human achievement. The collection spans 4000 BC to the present, including manuscripts, rare books, music, drawings, and art. The Modern and Contemporary Drawings collection showcases European modernism, American art from the 1960s, and works by renowned artists like Juan Gris, Paul Klee, and Andy Warhol.

The Position: Responsibilities and Expectations

The Acquavella Curator will report to the Museum’s Director and manage a team of two, plus interns and fellows. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing the collection of modern and contemporary drawings.
  • Researching and interpreting the collection.
  • Organizing exhibitions and writing publications.
  • Cultivating relationships with collectors, donors, and patron groups.
  • Collaborating with various departments for public and scholarly programs.
  • Supervising and mentoring team members and fellows.

Qualifications & Characteristics

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Expertise in 20th and 21st-century European and American art history.
  • Experience in organizing exhibitions and collection growth.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet overlapping deadlines.
  • Proficiency in museum database systems, such as TMS.

Location and Compensation

This full-time position is based in New York City, with a salary range of $125,000 – $150,000. Some domestic and international travel is required.
