Job Summary
The Curator of Museum Teaching and Learning creates, develops, implements and evaluates learning programs for university, school, and community audiences with a focus on innovative pedagogies and engagement strategies. This position reports to the Deputy Director for Public Experience and Learning and supervises the Education Program Coordinator, UMMA community and student docents, graduate students, and interns.

Responsibilities*
The Curator for Museum Teaching and Learning is responsible for managing community and student docent programs including recruitment, training, and evaluation. Communicates and enforces all Museum policies, working closely with Administration and Facilities to achieve success in this area. Supervises the Education Program Coordinator who schedules and implements tours for all audiences and docent, school, and teacher events. Develops new curricula as needed, prepares and gives lectures, recruits and manages guest speakers for docent and teacher programs.
This position develops teaching and learning programs and resources for K-12 teachers, university faculty, and GSIs as needed, delivered through workshops, texts, on-line or other vehicles. Works closely with the Mellon Manager of Academic Outreach and Teaching to build upon and expand university service, including teaching university classes and consulting with professors and staff. Plans, implements, and evaluates K-12 teacher professional development workshops with a range of K-12 educational partners. Supervises graduate students and interns in the development and delivery of lesson plans and teaching resources for K-12 students, teachers, and university faculty and instructors.
Represents UMMA at local, regional, and national gatherings dealing with teaching and learning in art museums.
Writes UMMA Magazine articles, interpretive materials, and contributes to grants and reports. Performs other work as needed in support of UMMA’s full range of public programming.
Due to the nature of the work, this position includes frequent weekend and evening work.
Required Qualifications*
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills are required. Sensitivity to diverse constituencies served by the Museum and the ability to work as a team member are necessary. Computer literacy is required as is knowledge of application of technology for education in a museum setting. A master’s degree in History of Art is strongly preferred or field(s) related to art and museum education, as is skill and experience in teaching about art to diverse audiences. Preference will be given to experienced museum educators with significant work experience in two or more of the program areas listed above. Five to eight years of museum experience is desired as is prior experience working in a university setting.
