Role Purpose

The Curator develops and delivers high-quality content for exhibitions and related activities, aligning with the Museum’s vision and history. This role involves engaging in research, development, and display of both permanent and temporary collections. The Curator actively participates in publishing, interpretation, and all related department activities. This position is crucial for supporting the museum’s curatorial and program strategy, adhering to Mathaf’s mission and goals.

Key Accountabilities

  • Research and develop innovative exhibitions and programs in collaboration with artists, partners, and colleagues.
  • Lead the organization and authoring of programs from conception to completion, including handling collections, special exhibitions, commissions, publications, talks, screenings, and digital content.
  • Manage the development, scheduling, and logistics of exhibitions and programs, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Oversee content production for departmental projects, including image reproduction and copyright compliance.
  • Collaborate with Collections, Exhibitions, Education, and Research departments to share curatorial content and updates.
  • Edit and supervise writing for exhibition and publication materials, both printed and digital.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality presentations for diverse audiences, including lectures and gallery talks.
  • Handle interpretation tasks and support the translation and editing of materials in Arabic and English.
  • Conduct original research and writing on Collection artists and artworks for exhibitions, projects, and talks. This includes proposing artists and artworks for acquisition.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary and modern art, particularly in the Middle East and the Arab world, with museum application experience.
  • Significant experience in exhibition-related research.
  • Proficiency in publication and critical writing in Modern and Contemporary Art.
  • Demonstrated research skills with a track record of writing and publications.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Arabic; other languages are a plus.
  • MA or PhD in Museum or Heritage Studies, Archaeology, Art History, Natural Sciences, Anthropology, Art Education, or Museum Gallery Practices.
  • 10 – 12 years of relevant work experience.
