Curator Of Paintings (Dutch, Italian, Spanish, German and Pre-1600)

As part of the curatorial team reporting to the Head of the Curatorial Department, you will be responsible for the care of the Wallace Collection’s Dutch, Italian, Spanish, German and pre-1600 paintings. You will be required to undertake research into your area of the collection and to develop the Wallace Collection’s reputation as a centre for excellence and scholarship, helping to promote understanding and enjoyment of these works and of the Wallace Collection and to foster and encourage the study of Old Master paintings. You will also be expected to help promote the Wallace Collection’s status as an international museum.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Devise, propose, research, plan and curate exhibitions and displays, both in the permanent galleries and in the new temporary exhibition gallery, relating to works in your care.
- Be the in-house curator for exhibitions and displays around themes connected with works in your care that have external curators
- Devise, propose and plan scholarly conferences and study days associated with temporary exhibitions and displays or the permanent collection
- Undertake research into the collections and works of art in your care and continue to maintain and develop the Wallace Collection’s reputation for scholarly research
- Publish on these collections and related topics
- Care for the works of art for which you are responsible, monitoring their condition and well-being
- Work closely with the Development team to support their efforts, including giving talks and tours when required. It is possible that these will sometimes be out of normal working hours
- Advise on the display and moving of these pictures in the Wallace Collection
- In liaison with the Director and Head of Conservation, and our external advisers, draw up priorities for conservation, assist with preparation of conservation proposals and reports, and oversee relevant picture conservation projects whilst in progress
- Maintain up-to-date and well-ordered object files, and associated picture reference files
- Ensure that MuseumPlus records are kept up to date with new information and new publication references
- Ensure that the labels, gallery sheets and Wallace Live entries, and other publicly-accessible information in the Galleries and on our website, are up to date
- Oversee new photography of pictures where necessary
- Deal with public enquiries, including objects brought in for opinion
- Take an active part where appropriate in any academic teaching in which the Wallace Collection is involved
- Take an active part in future scholarly publication programmes of the Wallace Collection
- Provide advice to official bodies as required, e.g. Export Reviewing Committee
- Advise the Librarian on maintenance and development of the relevant sections of the Library
- Undertake specialist and more general lectures, including monthly gallery talks and Wallace Collection study days and guided tours of the whole Collection
- Keep abreast of relevant material on the market
- Develop knowledge of related pictures in UK and overseas collections
- Develop contacts with relevant curatorial colleagues in other institutions, especially the National Gallery, the Wallace Collection’s regional partners (the Bowes Museum, Compton Verney, the Holburne Museum and Waddesdon Manor) and key overseas collections
- Play an active part in the programmes and work of specialist groups
- Undertake a share of administrative duties in the Curatorial Department, as required
