The role of Curator – Programmes & Engagement is centred on delivering high-quality programmes across a range of artistic fields with strong social and community impact. While the role spans several Create London projects, its focus is to manage and deliver curatorial and engagement programmes at Create London’s three venues in Newham and Barking & Dagenham.
The successful candidate will combine their creativity and management acumen with an ability to work collaboratively and creatively with many stakeholders, from artworld and architecture colleagues to local authorities, schools and local grassroots organisations. Deeply embedded in the local context, this role requires strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to be flexible and sensitive to community needs when managing commissions, selecting and supporting artists and gardeners for the organisation’s residency and public programme at The White House and supporting the public programme at A House for Artists.
Using domestic spaces (The White House and A House for Artists) as a way of meeting audiences at eye-level, Create London are particularly interested in candidates with a curiosity about how artistic approaches can support open-ended public engagement, often involving audiences with little previous engagement with the arts. The role requires a thoughtful approach to and genuine interest in community engagement which informs all aspects of the curatorial decision-making process.
An equally important aspect of the work is to line manage two engagement coordinators and to take an active role in the operational management of Create London’s venues. This involves overseeing financial and administrative tasks that keeps the venues welcoming and safe, while contributing to fundraising activities.
In this rewarding role of Curator – Programmes & Engagement, the candidate will contribute with rigorous commissioning and engagement strategies, alongside practical experience of delivering programmes from end to end, to engage and excite diverse audiences in East London.
