Location: Aberdeen Art Galleries and Museums
Duration: Permanent, Part Time 18.5 hours per week

Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums will be redeveloping the existing Art Gallery, historic Provost Skene’s House Museum and a new Museums Collections Centre through a multi-million pound project over the next 2 years. The successful applicant would be joining us at an exciting and dynamic stage in our history. The Curator (History) is a key member of the team for the effective delivery of these major projects for the City and for the development of our wider museums and gallery service.

The successful applicant will be working across our extensive mediaeval archaeology, social and industrial history collection, to deliver wider access to the collections in line with Aberdeen City Council and the National Strategy for Scotlandd’s Museums and Galleries.

You would join a small team of History curators within the wider museums and gallery service, who deliver collections research and care, exhibitions, events and projects, working with the nationally recognised history collections of Aberdeen city.

Job Purpose

Curate and develop collections and subject specialist knowledge for a specified area of expertise in the Museums and Galleries Collections. The postholder will document, exhibit and interpret these collections and advise and disseminate information on all aspects of the subject.

Requirements

Qualification Requirements

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:
A qualification at degree level in a subject related to Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums collections. A recognised post graduate qualification in museum practice or equivalent practical experience. The post holder will be required on occasion to work outside normal office hours to deliver activities and work successfully with target audiences

Responsibilities

Knowledge Requirements

The post holder needs to be able to demonstrate an understanding or experience of:
Current museums professional practice
Professional guidelines for the care, management, acquisition and disposal of museum collections
Extensive knowledge of one of the collections subject areas

Post Specific Requirements

The post holder is expected to demonstrate:
Ability to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines accurately
Excellent written communication skills, with an ability to present information accurately and in a manner accessible to diverse audiences
Extensive IT experience, particularly in Microsoft applications and databases
Ability to handle fragile and high value artefacts and objects safely
A well-developed visual sense and understanding of the issues involved in the display and exhibition of museum and gallery objects
Well-organised approach to work with an ability to handle information, records and statistics accurately.
