Curator Wanted for 2013 UABB*SZ

In succession to the first Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture in 2005 that initiated the independent curator responsibility system, we successfully invited Yung Ho Chang and Qingyun Ma, two international renowned Chinese architects, and Ou Ning, a cross-field cultural practitioner, to act as chief curators for the previous three Biennales.They proposed respectively “City: Open Door”, “City of Expiration & Regeneration”, and “City Mobilization” as the exhibition themes to represent the strategies and achievement of studying urban architecture and life, especially by probing into the process of “City and Urbanization” here in Shenzhen.

The 2011 Biennale brought a new international cultural feast for the city with support from various areas. This will be a sound foundation for the “Bi-city Biennale” to earn her fame in the international Biennale circle. We invited renowned curator Mr. Terence Riley as the chief curator, the of exhibition’s theme is “Architecture creates cities. Cities create architecture”, more than 60 project included in the show, all of them are excellent work which studied city issues with global view, among them were the Netherlands, Austria, Chile , Finland, Bahrain national Museum project. In addition, the Biennale has also successfully implemented 30 Academic Forums, “Shenzhen and Universiade” Special Exhibition,15 Satellite Exhibitions as well as street theater and many other public activities, greatly enriched the exhibition content. Interaction and display during the past three months, the Biennale has attracted about 150,000 spectators attending the event, its strong architectural feature and highly professional and international performance has won acclaim in and out the industry.

Success of the four previous Shenzhen Biennales embodies the open attitude, the spirit of innovation and the courage of constant exploration that all inherited from the history of establishing Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. These Biennales have initially built a communication platform for international art scenes in Shenzhen. Also in quest for the possibility of establishing an art exhibition system at international level, Biennale operates in accordance with international practices, and has inject a new variety into Shenzhen city as well as the contemporary art scenes, contributing beneficial attempts for forging a cultural brand for Shenzhen and improving cultural competitiveness of the city.

2013 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture will continue and further strengthen the fixed theme orientation “City and Urbanization”. And now, the 2013 curator position is open to applicants from all the relevant industries in all societies.

Chief curator of the Shenzhen Biennale should: 1. possess general knowledge of Shenzhen/China in the aspect of city development, urbanization, etc; 2. have professional background of Urban Planning, Urban Design, Landscape , Architecture.; 3. have achievement and influence in the architecture/arts field and the society; 4. have both china and international exhibition curatorial experience; 5. be professional and innovative; 6. own abundant integrated resources, (e.g., capability to invite top professionals, well-established relationships with sponsors/press, etc.); 7. establish a team to work with biennale committee office in regards of exhibition coordination, promotion, publication, related administrative affairs, etc.

(2) Please submit the “Curator Application Form of 2013 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture” and an draft exhibition plan/budget plan to the Organizer Committee before 24th Sep,2012.
