Curatorial and Conservation Internship
In honor of Philip Rylands
Thanks to the generosity of the Guggenheim UK Charitable Trust, the successful candidate has the unique opportunity to collaborate with the Curatorial and Conservation Departments for a five-six month internship, in honor of Philip Rylands, Director Emeritus.
The intern will gain hands-on experience of the numerous and varied curatorial and conservation aspects related to the museum’s dynamic twentieth-century art collection. Tasks may include conducting archival, library, and online research on selected themes, artists, works of art and their provenance; compiling bibliographies, chronologies and tasks related to the production of exhibition catalogues; coordinating object lists and layouts; and assisting with the preparation of wall texts and labels. The intern will also undertake research to support current conservation projects, as well as archival research on conservation treatments.
The deadline to submit for the 2023 Curatorial and Conservation Internship is 30 July.
CURATORIAL AND CONSERVATION INTERNSHIP AT THE PEGGY GUGGENHEIM COLLECTION
Internship period:
– Sep./Oct. 2023 – Jan./Feb. 2024
MAIN TASKS:
– Consistent communication with the curator and conservator for research and historical documentation.
– In-depth research on works in the collection, including archival, library, and online research.
– Compiling bibliographies, chronologies, and tasks related to exhibition catalog production.
– Assisting with the preparation of wall texts and labels.
– Researching conservation projects and treatments.
– Creating and updating records for the collection and conservation.
– Updating the museum’s website for curatorial and conservation activities.
– Communicating with registrar department, art handler, and technical staff for exhibition preparations, reinstallations, and loans.
– Attending exhibition implementation meetings.
– Assisting during collection rehangs and temporary exhibition installations.
– Supporting PGC activities and implementing health & safety measures.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
– Strong research skills.
– Proficiency in verbal and written communication.
– Excellent organizational and time management skills.
– Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
– Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities.
EDUCATION / PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:
– University education in or related to 20th-century art, curation, and/or conservation.
– Fluent in Italian & English.
– Background in Modern and Contemporary art/conservation.
– Preferred: 6 / 12 months experience in the field.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE INTERNSHIP:
– Participation in seminars, conferences, guided tours, and meetings with professionals.
– Educational trips to other Italian centers of modern and contemporary art.
– Talks and presentations by museum staff to gain insight into museum management and specific tasks.
– Access to the museum’s library of modern and contemporary art, archive, and art storage spaces.
SCHOLARSHIP:
– Selected candidate will receive a scholarship of €1000 per month.
