With generous support from the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program, Fathomers is pleased to announce a new opportunity for a Curatorial and Public Programs Intern for summer and/or fall 2020.
The Getty Marrow Curatorial and Public Programs Intern will assist with key curatorial and planning activities for Out of Line, a multi-site exhibition and programming series featuring artists Michael Jones McKean, Julia Solis/Seafoam Palace, and Ni’Ja Whitson, slated for 2020-2021 in Los Angeles. The intern will work directly with each of these artists throughout the ten-week term. In the final week of the term, the intern will have the opportunity to present a talk about their research (in addition to a required written summary) for an audience of Fathomers staff and collaborators.
The internship is imagined as a full-time (40 hours/week) position, with a stipend of $6,000, for a consecutive ten-week work period starting June 1 or after.
However, amid the current global situation, Fathomers’ goal is to be flexible and accommodating to the needs of the successful applicant. Please do not hesitate to propose an alternative start date or structure (for example, a longer, part-time term) if so desired.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Aiming to encourage greater diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program in Los Angeles supports substantive, full-time summer work opportunities for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts. Since the program began in 1993, 161 local arts institutions, including the Getty, have hosted over 3,300 internships, exposing students to career possibilities in the arts. Originally titled the Multicultural Undergraduate Internship program, its name changed in late 2018 with announcement of the retirement of long-time Getty Foundation director Deborah Marrow, who began the program. Responsibilities
Seventy-five percent of the intern’s time will be devoted to Out of Line. Duties will include:
- interviewing artist(s) for publication online
- assisting in the planning and production of a research convening of artists, scientists, theorists and musicians
- joining preparatory meetings between Fathomers and a partnering museum for Whitson’s project
- assisting in exhibition and public program planning for McKean’s sculpture The Fall
- participating in research and planning for Solis/Seafoam Palace’s public intervention at a historic site in LA County.
The remaining 25 percent of the intern’s time will include:
- learning about key operations of a mid-sized arts organization
- shadowing each full-time staff member
- participating in external communications and considering best practices for documenting Out of Line.
Requirements
Eligibility:
- The Getty Marrow internships are intended for outstanding students who are members of groups underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including but not limited to individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent.
- Eligibility for the internships is limited to currently enrolled undergraduates who reside in or attend college in Los Angeles County.
- Students must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2020, and those who will complete their degree by September 1, 2020 are also eligible to apply.
- Candidates can be from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts.
