Curatorial Apprenticeship
Latela Curatorial provides the opportunity for emerging arts professionals to gain behind the scenes experience in the fast-paced art business.
This online experience is designed as an Introductory Art Consulting & Curatorial Course and teaches the practical tasks related to working hands-on as an art consultant that are not taught in a BA or MA academic program.
This unique opportunity allows the Apprentice to learn about exhibition curation, art sourcing, placemaking, culture curating, working with artists & clients on procurement projects, and arts management and gallery operations.
Time commitment is flexible weekly, however commitment requires a span over at least four months to fully incubate.
We have successfully transitioned this program to being 100% online due to the pandemic.
ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
A 4-month Academic Curriculum is broken into monthly modules where lectures, readings and assignments are posted every week and can be completed any time during that month’s module. This format keeps apprentices accountable and on schedule, while providing flexibility around other commitments.
:: Module 1 :: History of Curatorial Studies, “Artworlds” & the Transformation of the Avant-Garde
:: Module 2 :: Commercial Art Gallery Management, Non-profit Art Spaces, Grant Writing & Working with/Understanding Institutions (includes questioning their roles)
:: Module 3 :: The Hands-on Experience: Curating Exhibitions & Working with Living Artists (includes press, promotion, platforms & publics)
:: Module 4 :: Introduction to the Business of Art Consulting, Finding your Place or Starting your Own Business in the Artworld
All coursework is hosted online through a private portal. Apprentices have access to the private portal for the duration of the program.
PRACTICUM
In addition to the Academic Curriculum, a Practicum of 200 hours is required for the completion of the Latela Curatorial Apprenticeship Certificate and professional recommendation. Practicum hours begin at the completion of course work and must be completed within four months. Time commitment is flexible and set by the Apprentice.
The Practicum is tailored to each Apprentice’s interests and professional needs. Past projects have included:
• Curating an art exhibition from start to finish (online/IRL)
• Creating arts-related projects grant application packets
• Creating public art proposals
• Building specific experience for the art world job market (to include registraral, curatorial, archival and provenance work)
• Incubating the start of a new business as a freelance curator, art consultant, or arts expert (business plan, strategies, systems, voice)
*NOTE: Curated exhibitions do not necessarily need to be hosted on Latela Curatorial’s platform. During the Apprenticeship Program, each Apprentice will work closely with our staff to determine the best strategy for their professional goals. For example, it may be that the Practicum hours go towards preparing exhibition proposals to larger venues or that Latela Curatorial doesn’t provide the best target audience for the proposed exhibition. The best interest of the Apprentice’s future career goals will always be considered first. In the case the Apprentice decides to curate their own exhibition to be shared publicly through Latela Curatorial, the apprentice will be recognized as the sole curator of their exhibition. In either scenario, the Apprentice will follow provided guidelines related to the development of their own art exhibition including: artist correspondence, developing an exhibition narrative, creating promotional materials such as flyers and press release materials, overseeing exhibition contracts, etc.
