JOB DESCRIPTION 

The Julia Stoschek Foundation in Berlin is looking for a highly motivated, independent, and critically minded international candidate to join the team four days a week. They will assist curatorial staff in all areas of their responsibilities and must be willing to work across departments as needed. The candidate is expected to have spoken and written fluency in English and feel comfortable writing (or adapting) short, well-researched mediation texts for exhibitions, artworks, newsletters, websites etc. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to public programs in the form of screenings, the JSF podcast, and other events as agreed upon with the curator. Must be willing to occasionally work evenings and weekends and give gallery tours to private and professional guests. 

This position comes with a German contract of employment, which includes social and medical insurance, as well as 20 days of paid vacation. The contract is limited to one year, which can be extended for another 12-month term. 

The office is not barrier-free and only accessible via stairs (the building does not have an elevator). 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in curatorial staff in all areas of their responsibilities, including administrative work, e.g. preparing presentations, drafting interoffice and extra-institutional communications, scheduling meetings, etc.
  • Assists curators with logistical and conceptual preparation for programing, including scholarly research and writing on subjects including artists, historical periods, social contexts, theoretical keywords, specific artworks, locations of artworks, photograph sources, etc.
  • Supports research and preparation for online content including Social Media, collections records, bibliographic and biographical records and files, and PR material.
  • Assists with arranging loans; catalog preparation; preparation of exhibition checklists; determining tech specifications for media and performance works; developing video, audio and text assets for digital use. 
  • Communicates closely with artists and collaborators.
  • Works directly with artists and production team on live performances. Answers inquiries and conducts some gallery tours as necessary for visitors, etc.
  • Keeps informed of current artistic and exhibition activities related to local, national and international media and performance by visiting galleries and museums, reading publications, conducting artist studio visits, etc., and conveys perspectives and observations to the senior staff.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Hands-on approach, ready to work closely with a small, face-paced team 
  • Degree in art history, media or curatorial studies, or a comparable academic field, relevant work experience and competence within the history of media and the moving image. 
  • Experience supporting the presentation of live and time-based work as well as resourcefulness in collaborating with living artists.
  • Sufficient flexibility and high level of enthusiasm to work as part of a curatorial team and across departments.
  • Openness to feedback and curiosity for learning and mentorship from colleagues.
  • Digital fluency and experience conceptualizing and delivering online projects including Social Media.
  • Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills, as well as ability to effectively communicate interpersonally across multiple departments, constituencies, and audiences.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive situations and matters.
  • Ability to prioritize across a fast-paced work environment and manage more than one project at a time while completing assignments on deadline.
  • Facility with critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Working knowledge of standard office technology, procedures and equipment.
  • Reading knowledge, verbal and written fluency in English.  
  • Strong communication skills
  • Feels comfortable socializing with visitors and guests at events (openings, screening, talks, etc.

The programming at the JULIA STOSCHEK FOUNDATION comprises large-scale solo and group exhibitions, performances, screenings, talks and other discursive formats. The exhibition space in Berlin spans 2500 sqm across three floors. Exhibitions are both collection-based and temporary.
