Curatorial Assistant, Asian American Art Initiative

Founded when the university opened in 1891, the Cantor Arts Center was expanded and renamed in 1999 for lead donors Iris and B. Gerald Cantor. The Cantor’s collection spans 5,000 years and includes more than 38,000 works of art from around the globe. With 24 galleries and numerous special exhibitions each year, the Cantor is an established resource for teaching and research on campus.

In this role, you will:

  • Work primarily to support the recently launched Asian American Art Initiative (AAAI).
  • The Curatorial Assistant (CA) assists with the Museum’s collection, exhibitions, acquisitions, publications, public programs, and campus engagement as they relate to the AAAI.
  • The AAAI aims to establish Stanford and the Cantor as the leading academic and curatorial center for the study of Asian American and Asian diaspora artists and makers and encompasses a range of activities: collecting and exhibiting works of Asian American and Asian diaspora artists; preserving archival materials; digital humanities; fostering undergraduate and graduate education; and cultivating community collaboration and dialogue through public programming.
  • The CA is responsible for assisting in all aspects of collections and exhibitions development as they relate to Asian American art.
  • They interface with Museum registrars on acquisitions, loans, and exhibition projects; the maintenance and development of the collection database records, and the management of departmental activities including research, programs, education, public affairs, and development.
  • Candidates from communities historically underrepresented in the museum field are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Please note that this position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered hybrid with 3 days on site and 2 days remote.

In order to be successful, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience or a combination of education and relevant experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and efficiently, with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and database management applications.
  • Project management skills.
  • Experience in visual arts is highly desired.
