Location: North Adams, Massachusetts, USA
MASS MoCA, a leading contemporary art museum with 300,000 square feet of exhibition space, seeks a Curatorial Assistant to support its ambitious exhibitions program. The museum focuses on both short-term (6 months to 2 years) and long-term (5 to 25 years) exhibitions, working closely with artists to create new work through site visits and fabrication residencies. The Curatorial Assistant will play a crucial role in assisting the Chief Curator, other staff curators, and guest curators with exhibition research, planning, and coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with research and planning for exhibitions and publications.
- Manage exhibition-related materials, including catalogues, didactic materials, and image rights.
- Coordinate logistics for visiting artists and curators, including travel and accommodation.
- Support curators with administrative tasks, including managing exhibition checklists, lender lists, and maintaining databases.
- Participate in exhibition tours and public programs, and assist with the production of events such as artist talks and panels.
- Collaborate with internal departments (Education, Performing Arts, Marketing) on exhibition-related content.
- Work with Marketing & Communications to meet copy deadlines for program announcements.
- Curatorial Assistant may have the opportunity to curate small exhibitions.
Requirements:
- Advanced degree in art history, museum studies, or related field preferred.
- Minimum one year of experience in a similar role or independent curatorial practice.
- Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work both independently and within a team.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and task management tools is required.
- Passion for contemporary art and culture, with a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
Work Conditions:
- Desk located in an open office environment with regular co-worker interaction.
- Ability to move throughout the museum and sit for extended periods.
- Occasional evening and weekend work required.
- Participation in institutional events, such as the Solid Sound and FreshGrass music festivals.
