Reporting to the Associate Curator of Photography, the Curatorial Assistant assists in research, planning, production, and interpretation of special exhibitions as well as other duties associated with the department’s external relations functions.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSABILITIES:
- Assist curators with research for special exhibitions and accessions. Includes assistance in writing object labels, wall texts, press releases, grant proposals and other promotional materials.
- Work with curators to create and maintain checklists and exhibition records in database
- Manage loans and loan forms, working with registrar
- Coordinate framing, installation, conservation and shipping with the exhibition team and registrar
- Communicate with departments across the museum to maintain exhibition production schedule
- Write object labels and extended labels for exhibitions, working with Publications, Graphic Design, as assigned
- Assist with catalogue research as needed
- Attend project meetings and provide exhibition-related information and material to Development, Marketing and Communications, Education and Public Programs, Museum Store and other departments, as directed
- Give private tours of exhibitions to groups and individuals, as assigned
- Assist curators in prospecting for new areas of focus, thematic topics, and emerging artists
- Assist curators in building and maintaining relationships with collectors, trustees and accessions committee members
- Assist curators in building and maintaining relationships with artists, galleries and partner institutions
- Assist curators in developing content for Photo Interpretive Gallery
- Assist Associate Curator with lecture program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training: Possession of Master’s degree in Art History or closely related field.
Work Experience: Two years related experience.
Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of modern and contemporary art history and terminology, and superb writing and diplomatic skills essential. Ability to provide basic office support including word processing, database management, power point, faxing, filing, and answering telephones. Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. Strong organizational skills a must: ability to prioritize and organize multiple activities, as well as supervise the activities staff members around a common project. Ability to communicate effectively with donors, artists, Museum staff, colleagues, and the general public, whether in person, on the telephone, or in writing. Strong second language skills a plus.
