About the Royal Academy of Arts

The Royal Academy of Arts is one of the UK’s foremost arts institutions, famous for its world-class temporary exhibition programme in the Main Galleries and the Sackler Wing of Galleries including Ai WeiweiPainting the Modern Garden and In the Age of Giorgione. This is an exciting time to join the Royal Academy as it approaches its 250th anniversary in 2018. A series of major investments currently underway will transform the physical and digital infrastructure as well as the public offer of this unique institution. The Masterplan designed by one of the world’s leading architects, Sir David Chipperfield RA, will transform the Royal Academy, uniting its two distinct buildings, Burlington House and 6 Burlington Gardens, to create a 2.5 acre campus in the heart of Mayfair. This ambitious scheme will provide refurbished galleries, a double height auditorium, a dedicated learning centre and a RA Collections gallery, as well as enabling greater public visibility of the RA Schools at the heart of the Academy.

The Royal Academy of Arts has been acquiring works for the Collection since its foundation in 1768. It now holds over 900 paintings, 1,200 sculptures, 30,000 works on paper, including prints, furniture, silver, and other memorabilia. The Collection includes paintings by many famous British artists such as John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough and J.M.W. Turner as well as contemporary works by recently elected Academicians such as Grayson Perry, Yinka Shonibare and Cornelia Parker.

About this role

To support the increasing activities of the Collections team, we need a Curatorial Assistant to support the curatorial activities of the Department across a range of areas. From researching provenance details and to compiling catalogue entries and generating web content, you will provide a high standard of administrative and curatorial support. You will assist with exhibitions from the Collections, and be involved with the administration of acquisitions and co-ordinating visitors and scholars.

About you

We’re looking for a diligent, organised and self-motivated individual. You must have a passion for the history of British Art, and be willing to take on a range of tasks. Strong research and communication skills are essential, ideally gained working with collections, libraries and/or archives. You will have outstanding attention to detail, and a degree in History of Art or equivalent. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to build networks both internally and externally. Experience of documentation, cataloguing and research would be advantageous.

This role will require you to be adaptable and willing to take on a range of tasks, as well as occasional out of hours working, for example, to supervise installations of collections.
