The Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields is seeking a Curatorial Assistant to help us plan the future of our galleries. Working with a team of senior leaders, curators, interpretation planners, evaluators, and designers, the Curatorial Assistant will provide crucial support to a gallery revisioning project that includes planning gallery reinstallations and thematic test installations at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. This position will be responsible for maintaining all checklists related to this revisioning project, as well as conducting crucial cataloguing research for objects in our permanent collection. The Curatorial Assistant is a temporary full-time position (37.5 hours/week with benefits), lasting approximately two years.

Primary Responsibilities

The following responsibilities describe the general nature of work for employees in this position, but this is not intended as an exclusive or all-inclusive inventory.

  • Execute and manage checklists related to gallery reinstallation projects in the museum’s collections management database (KE-Emu)
  • Liaise with curatorial, conservation, and registration departments during the checklist development process for input regarding object condition and availability
  • Work collaboratively with curators to conduct catalogue research and database cleanup for selected artworks in the Museum’s collection. This includes studying historical files, viewing artworks, identifying basic cataloging information and identification of styles, movements, periods, and schools.

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Excellent research and organizational skills and a keen attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Museum Collections Management Systems (KE-Emu proficiency preferred)
  • Ability to work independently and manage one’s own time efficiently

Education and/or Experience

  • MA in Art History or related field
  • Proven working experience with museum collections and generating checklists
  • Proven experience with archival research and cataloging artworks
  • Experience with handling art objects within a museum setting
  • Experience with project management in a museum setting
