The Museum of Modern Art is seeking a Curatorial Assistant to support the Drawings and Prints team within the curatorial department. This position is designed to assist senior curators with research for exhibitions and publications, as well as administrative tasks related to acquisitions, exhibitions, collection records, bibliographic and biographical files, loans, and general curatorial inquiries. An ideal candidate will hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in art history and have a strong academic or curatorial interest in the late 1970s/early 1980s downtown New York art scene—experience that will be instrumental in developing an upcoming monographic exhibition focused on process and works on paper.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibition and Research Support:
    • Assist senior curators with research, planning, organization, and execution of upcoming exhibitions and gallery rotations.
    • Write, edit, and help produce museum publications and exhibition-related materials, including wall texts and extended object labels.
  • Collection Management:
    • Research and catalog the Museum collection and archives as they relate to the exhibition project.
    • Answer inquiries related to the collection.
  • Administrative Tasks:
    • Perform bibliographic and checklist research, handle loan correspondence, assist with publication research and production, manage website content, and support public program planning.
    • Aid in the maintenance of the collection and loans, and coordinate custodial, registration, conservation, and preparation work.
  • Collaboration:
    • Act as a liaison with external partners and other Museum departments.
    • Assist with research and preparation for potential acquisitions, including biographical and bibliographical research.
    • Conduct daily inspections of the collection in the gallery and temporary exhibitions, and manage follow-up arrangements in case of damage or deterioration.
    • Conduct gallery tours and answer visitor inquiries.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Perform any other tasks reasonably related to the curatorial functions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in art history or a related field.
  • Demonstrated academic or curatorial interest in the late 1970s/early 1980s downtown New York art scene.
  • One to two years of experience supporting loan exhibitions and accompanying publications.
  • Experience working with works on paper.
  • Proficiency in a second language is a plus.
  • Superior research and writing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) is beneficial.
