
Curatorial Assistant (part-time)
Provides general curatorial and administrative assistance in the area of contemporary art and design. Assists in the researching and cataloguing of the exhibition histories and works by contemporary artists and designers related to the exhibition, Seeing the Unseeable: Intersections in Data, Science, Art, and Design.
Provides general administrative assistance to the Exhibitions Department, located in three areas: Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery, located at Hillside campus; Mullin Gallery, located at South campus; and ArtCenter DTLA, located in downtown Los Angeles.
This is a fixed-term, part-time position at 20 to 24 hours per week.
Reports to: Director of Programs, ArtCenter DTLA; and Senior Curator of Exhibitions
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in the field of art history or visual studies or related field from an accredited college or university
- A high level of professionalism and discretion
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Historic knowledge of contemporary art and/or design
- Proficiency with MS Office suite, Google docs, Dropbox, Zoom, and other computer programs
- Strong reading, writing and proofreading skills with attention to detail
- Must be able to move between administrative and curatorial responsibilities and be comfortable with multitasking
- Must have ability to keep schedules current and monitor diverse activities
- Ability to assimilate details
- Able to work collaboratively and independently
- Preferred Qualification
Master’s degree or Ph.D. (ABD) in the field of art history or visual studies from an accredited college or university
Essential Functions
Exhibitions — 50%
- Assist curators in research and all other aspects of exhibition preparation related to Seeing the Unseeable: Intersections in Data, Science, Art, and Design; part of the Getty PST Art x Science x LA initiative (for fall 2024); assist in compiling data and writing reports; writing informational, promotional, and educational texts; communicating with project stakeholders; and other projects as assigned
- Specific duties related to exhibitions include: Ability to maintain control of student groups, able to interact in an appropriate and polite manner with members of the staff, Board of Trustees, volunteers, the public, patrons, visitors, and contract professionals, such as conservators, designers, essayists, translators and museum contacts
Administrative — 50%
- Provide general administrative, clerical, and curatorial support to Exhibitions department staff: Director of the Williamson Gallery, Senior Curator of Exhibitions, and Program Director of ArtCenter DTLA.
- Attend meetings, handle correspondence, and tend to other departmental needs
- Responsibilities may include some visitor services duties
Mandatory Duty to Report
