The Broad is seeking a Curatorial Assistant with experience in publications, art and museums to support the development and production of publications related to the museum’s collection.

Reporting to the Curator and Publications Manager, the Curatorial Assistant, Publications will undertake administrative, editorial and research tasks, including biographical research and writing, fact-checking, editing, image rights and reproduction, and project management.

The role encompasses collection and special exhibition catalogues, online publications, in-gallery brochures, and interpretive and educational materials. The Curatorial Assistant will also support the writing and editing of public-facing content about The Broad’s collection and exhibitions for the Curatorial, Marketing and Communications, and Audience Engagement teams.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the development and planning of The Broad’s publications, with an emphasis on innovation in contemporary art publishing;
Conduct research and contribute writing, fact-checking and editing related to the museum’s collection and publications;
Maintain publication schedules under the supervision of the Curator and Publications Manager;
Liaise with museum staff, writers, publishers, designers, artists, estates, galleries, external editors and photographers;
Gather, produce and track deliverables including images, essays, interviews, and historical and biographical information;
Obtain selected permissions from copyright holders for the reproduction of images and other content;
Review and edit galleys, bluelines and plotter proofs, and attend colour-proofing sessions;
Research, draft and edit content relating to The Broad’s collection and exhibitions, including timelines, archival materials, staff training modules and interpretive labels;
Draft interpretive content supporting the museum’s forthcoming expansion when required; and
Undertake other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

At least one to two years of relevant experience in museum publications, publishing, curatorial or editorial work, or a related field;
A bachelor’s degree in Art History, Art, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Library Science, Publishing or a related discipline;
A demonstrated interest in modern and contemporary art;
A commitment to expanding art-historical narratives and making them more inclusive;
Experience in copy-editing and fact-checking;
The ability to conduct, analyse and organise primary and secondary research;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
The ability to write for public audiences while supporting the museum’s voice and style;
Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively;
The ability to work independently and collaborate across teams; and
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

A proven record of research and writing is preferred. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish or another language would be an advantage.

Physical Requirements

The role requires the ability to lift, carry, push and pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. It also involves extended computer use, repetitive wrist, hand and finger movements, and occasional bending, lifting and twisting.

About The Broad

The Broad was founded in 2015 by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad to make contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. Located on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, the museum offers free general admission and presents special exhibitions and live events in a building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

Welcoming approximately 900,000 visitors each year, the museum houses the Broad collection, a major collection of postwar and contemporary art. It is also the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s international lending library, which has loaned works to museums worldwide since 1984.

An expansion of the museum is scheduled to open before the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
