Curatorial Assistant
The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks a limited-term Curatorial Assistant to work in the Department of Sculpture and Decorative Arts, whose collection is devoted to European sculpture and decorative arts dating between around 1200 and 1900, with a small group of modern outdoor sculpture ranging from 1910-1980. Under the supervision of the Senior Curator, the Curatorial Assistant is responsible for performing research-oriented duties in support of routine curatorial tasks, collection management, exhibitions, publications, acquisitions, and other projects.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Applies knowledge of art history to routine curatorial assignments
- Documents objects and may perform basic fact finding to support curatorial research efforts (bibliography, provenance history, exhibition history)
- Assists with updating the paper files and database records for items in the collection
- Assists with preparation of objects lists and Powerpoint presentations
- Assists with writing labels and other didactics, and may provide content for social media platforms
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in art or art history required; Master’s preferred
- 0-2 years art historical or museum experience
- Competent to work in basic curatorial functions
- Reading fluency in at least one foreign language (modern or ancient) required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with art historical research and writing
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe Photoshop)
- Good working knowledge of TMS (The Museum System)
- Reading fluency in at least one modern foreign language preferred (German highly desired)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
