Head of curatorial department

The Museum of Art and History of Geneva (MAH) is one of Europe’s foremost encyclopædic cultural institutions. Its collection encompasses a span of fifteen thousand years and includes over half a million objects in fields ranging from from archæology, painting, sculpture, works on paper, coins, furniture, and articles of daily life, as well as timepieces and jewellery.

The museum has engaged in a comprehensive program of strategic review and transformation. This project has led to the revitalisation of its vision, mission, and values. The MAH’s long-term goal is to become a dynamic beacon of culture for Geneva and its region, as well as an internationally recognised laboratory for envisioning and advancing the role of the museum in the twenty-first century. To achieve this objective, the MAH is exploring how best to realise its full potential to connect people, fostering an array of creative expressions through exhibition spaces and media over time. It continues to actively pursue the expansion and renovation project that is currently underway.

As part of this evolving mission, the MAH is looking for a:

CURATORIAL DEPARTMENT MANAGER (full time)

Your mission, primary duties and responsibilities:

You envision and implement general policy for the department while incorporating the director’s strategic plan. In that context, you prioritise the visibility and value of the collections as well as the development of ambitious scientific research programs and innovative projects in cultural partnerships, at times on the international level. Maintaining a consistent scientific thread in programming, throughout the year you coordinate and supervise the completion of the department’s projects. Driving cross-organisational functionality, you value streamlining and evolving practices within the department by networking all of MAH’s units. As a chief manager, you supervise the department in matters of organisation, method, administration and budget and you establish an exemplary managerial team under your leadership.   

Your background:

As a university graduate, you have ten years experience in a high-level administrative position at a cultural institution and demonstrate expertise in management. You draw from a solid profession network in scientific, artistic and cultural circles, including on the international level, and you are confident organising largescale projects. Having a good command of museology and cultural interpretation, you are able to design and integrate an innovative and experimental narrative for a broad museum audience. You are fluent in French and English, spoken and written, including software languages, and you have a solid command of German. You are able to motivate, be in charge of and delegate responsibility to staff by setting unifying objectives and priorities. You encourage teamwork, facilitate exemplary collaboration and connect with multidisciplinary teams and partners from all backgrounds, including under stress.

You will reside within the Canton of Geneva or within the authorised residential area
