Job Summary
The Curatorial Director is a vital member of Javett-UP’s executive team. This role combines strategic planning, leadership, and artistic expertise. It involves shaping and implementing the Centre’s vision and strategy. The Curatorial Director leads the Art Centre’s exhibitions, educational, and public programs, and manages its collections.
Key Responsibilities
Curatorial Vision:
- Develop and implement curatorial vision and strategy.
- Collaborate with the CEO and align with the Centre’s vision and values.
Curatorial Leadership:
- Lead the development of curatorial programs and projects.
- Manage and mentor the curatorial team.
Curatorial Programme:
- Oversee exhibition content, ensuring balance and value for audiences.
- Develop a diverse exhibition program and manage budgets.
Collections Management:
- Manage all aspects of collection care and policy implementation.
- Develop a digital strategy for collection management.
Public Engagement:
- Develop educational and public programs.
- Build relationships with local and global communities.
Research and Scholarship:
- Oversee scholarly publications.
- Collaborate with academic and cultural institutions.
Collaborations and Partnerships:
- Cultivate relationships for collaborations and programming.
Sustainability:
- Assist in fundraising and revenue generation initiatives.
Education and Experience
- Advanced degree in art history, curatorial studies, or related field.
- 7+ years in curatorial and collections experience.
- 5 years of leadership experience.
- Proven track record in managing high-profile exhibitions and programs.
Specialised Knowledge and Competencies
- Expertise in South African and African visual arts.
- Knowledge of ethical standards and legal requirements.
- Exceptional communication skills.
- Proficiency in multiple South African languages preferred.
