Role Summary
This post is designed to introduce someone who has a good scholarly art historical background in European painting to the responsibilities of curatorship in a national collection.
The Dorset Curatorial Fellow will receive training and gain experience in a variety of curatorial responsibilities, including the display, research and interpretation of the Baroque paintings in the National Gallery’s collection.
The Curatorial Fellow will be assigned to the 1600–1800 section of the curatorial team and will work collaboratively within the Collections directorate (which includes Curatorial, Conservation, Scientific, Registrars, Framing and Art Handling departments). The postholder will also assist in delivering the public programme, working closely with exhibitions, digital and learning departments.
Person Specification
- The successful candidate must have a postgraduate degree in art history. Knowledge of the field of European painting 1600–1800, at either first degree or postgraduate level is essential. In addition, the postholder must have a demonstrable interest in pursuing a museum career.
- Fluency in English, and a good knowledge of at least one of the main European languages, is required, as is the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines. The postholder should be a lucid writer and competent public speaker, aware of the needs of both a specialist and general audience.
- The postholder will report to the Curator of the Later Italian, Spanish and French 17th-century paintings, and the Curator of the Dutch and Flemish paintings 1600–1800.
