Deadline: May 20, 2016

Emerging curators are invited to apply as a Curatorial Fellow to work with SculptureCenter’s curators to organize the In Practice exhibition, culled from an open call for artists. The In Practice program supports emerging artists and curators in creating new work for exhibition at SculptureCenter in early 2017.

SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit arts institution that takes the history and legacy of sculpture as a framework from which to consider the diverse activity taking place in the field of contemporary art. SculptureCenter’s program encourages artists and audiences to explore the possibilities of sculpture  and the multifarious ways in which sculpture is developing and connecting to other forms of expression in contemporary art.

Since 2003, In Practice has supported over 130 emerging artists with the critical resources of space, funding, time, and administrative support to help turn their ideas into reality. Exemplifying the spirit of SculptureCenter’s mission, In Practice provides new ways to discover the most innovative artwork, foster experimentation, and give participants the opportunity to develop and present work in what is often their first institutional exhibit in New York City, introducing audiences to emerging talent and new ideas. Past In Practice artists include: Michele Abeles, Fia Backström, A. K. Burns, Michael DeLucia, Aleksandra Domanovic, Essex Olivares, Brendan Fernandes, Ryan Johnson, Joanna Malinowska, Justin Matherly, Virginia Overton, Marlo Pascual, Rachel Rose, Xaviera Simmons, Valerie Snobeck, Agathe Snow, Josh Smith, and Erik Wysocan.

The Curatorial Fellow will gain hands-on experience in a museum setting and have the opportunity to organize the In Practice exhibition. This is a project-based fellowship and only requires periodic on-site meetings. The Curatorial Fellow is expected to work independently in communication with SculptureCenter curatorial staff.

Duties will include: participating in the review process for artist submissions, conducting studio visits with all artists who make it to the final round, conceiving of an organizing concept, creating a proposal for review and approval by SculptureCenter curatorial staff, working with the selected artists on the finalization of their projects, participating in the installation process, and writing a press release and other didactics. The Curatorial Fellow will work closely with SculptureCenter curatorial staff on all aspects of the proposal and organization process and   will report to SculptureCenter’s Curator. The Curatorial Fellow must have excellent communication skills, organizational ability, and attentiveness to deadlines. The Curatorial Fellow will receive a stipend of $2,000.

SculptureCenter curatorial staff will review all application materials and invite select candidates for in-person interviews in June. Applicants should have at least three years of curatorial experience and must reside in New York City.

Interested curators are asked to submit a one-page cover letter indicating their interest and relevant experience, resume, three writing samples, and two professional references to: curatorcall@sculpture-center.org. Please use the subject heading: Curatorial Fellow Application.
