The Phillips Collection Terra Curatorial Fellow
The Phillips Collection’s fellowship program is open to full-time undergraduate students, full-time graduate students, and recent graduates. The purpose of the fellowship program is to offer students and recent graduates meaningful work, educational experiences, and real-life practice in their fields of academic study and/or interest.
The Curatorial Fellow will assist with research funded by the Terra Foundation dedicated to the recontextualization of the permanent collection. Research will consider new perspectives, untold stories, and make connections between the artwork and history of The Phillips Collection and Howard University Gallery of Art. The majority of works will be pre-1980 American.
The Fellow will work closely with the Library and Archives department and work under the supervision of Adjunct Curator Adrienne Childs and Curatorial Assistant Camille Brown.
Fellowship Stipend: $15,000
Duration: The fellowship program will run from Sept 2022 to May2023. Fellowship length and schedule may vary depending on the needs of the department.
Academic Credit: Depending on the nature of the internship and approval of the student’s college or university, academic credit may be granted for internships. Student applicants should consult their academic advisor for additional information.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct scholarly and archival research on objects in the permanent collection
- Research, draft, write labels, texts ,that can be used in future exhibitions.
- Research, coordinate, and prepare materials for future catalogue and other digital and/or in-print publications.
- Other administrative, research, and support duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
- Background in art history or museum studies preferred.
- Excellent oral, written, and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and computer abilities, to include proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of Mimsy and ArchiveSpace preferred.
- Ability to travel to local institutions (public libraries, university libraries, etc.) for research
- Ability to work well with others.
- Junior or senior undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate preferred
- Ability to work independently, thoroughly and with attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and manage priorities.
- Experience with standard office procedures and practices.
