The Studio Museum in Harlem, founded in 1968, is a leading institution focused on artists of African descent and work influenced by Black culture. They offer a 12-month Robert Rauschenberg Curatorial Fellowship aimed at emerging professionals committed to the museum field and Black art. The fellow will assist the Assistant Curator with exhibition programming, research, writing, and coordinating the Artist-in-Residence program. This role offers hands-on curatorial experience within a dynamic museum environment and includes travel funding for research.
Fellowship Format
- Duration: 12 months
- Salary: $50,000 annually

- Travel stipend: $2,500 for approved research trip
- Collaborative work with museum departments and external partners
- Position classified as non-exempt, with possible overtime and weekend/evening availability
Essential Duties
- Assist in producing didactic texts and exhibition publications
- Support exhibition proposals, scheduling, and production deadlines
- Coordinate Artist-in-Residence studio visits and scheduling
- Conduct original research and contribute to museum publications and digital content
- Collaborate with Communications, Learning, and Engagement departments
- Provide administrative and project support
- Perform special projects as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of mid-20th century and contemporary art by artists of African descent
- Proficient in Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud
- Familiar with Museum System (TMS/TMS Collections) and NetX
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Flexibility to manage shifting priorities and multiple deadlines
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in art history, museum studies, or related field
- Experience in a museum or cultural organization
