Luce Curatorial Fellow

Institution: Portland Art Museum
Location: Portland, Oregon, USA

The Portland Art Museum seeks a Luce Foundation Curatorial Fellow to support the Curator of Native American Art on a long-term renovation and reinstallation of the Native American Art permanent collections galleries. This full-time, one-year, paid fellowship offers the opportunity to gain experience in collections care, exhibition planning, community engagement, acquisitions, and public programming.

The fellow will work closely with curators, designers, and community partners while participating in collaborative museum practices centered on equity, access, and inclusion. The position is ideal for candidates with academic or professional experience in Native American art, curatorial practice, and museum studies.

Fellowship Details

  • Type of employment: Full-time, temporary (1 year)
  • Salary: $55,722–$74,982/year (DOE)
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 35 hours/week (occasional evenings/weekends)
  • Location: On-site initially; hybrid possible after 6 months
  • Start date: Rolling, position open until filled

Responsibilities Include

  • Assist with research, planning, and coordination of a permanent collection gallery renovation
  • Liaise with artists, scholars, consultants, and community members
  • Facilitate access to collections for Native researchers and scholars
  • Support acquisitions, label writing, and exhibition texts
  • Contribute to programming, public presentations, and curatorial outreach
  • Foster relationships with Native communities across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest

Eligibility Criteria

  • M.A. in Art History, Museum Studies, or related field (Ph.D. or ABD preferred); or 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of Native American art and cultures, especially in North America
  • Experience working with Native artists and communities
  • Public speaking and strong written communication skills
  • Familiarity with museum databases (e.g., TMS, Mimsy) preferred
  • Strong organizational and collaborative skills
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in museum practice
