Curatorial Fellow
This position is generally supported by a grant from the Regional Economic Development Council Workforce Investment Arts Career Development Fellowships for Underrepresented Communities. The 12-Month Curatorial Fellow will provide specialized training in the curatorial field to a student or recent graduate who is a member of a group or groups that are historically underrepresented in the curatorial field and will further the goal of promoting pluralistic museums. This opportunity will provide hands-on, in-depth experience with the Albright-Knox’s world-renowned collection of modern and contemporary Art, and the Fellow will participate fully in the museum’s curatorial department, seeking to further that department’s research mission and goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Research and organize at least one exhibition during the Fellowship period.
- Contribute substantial assistance and research (including occasional coordination, writing, and the organization of publications or labels) for the Albright-Knox’s larger collection exhibition program, which generates six large-scale, and seven to ten smaller scholarly and project-based exhibitions per year.
- Contribute research to and participate in the development of the Albright-Knox’s robust annual program of acquisitions.
- Work closely with the Adult Programs Coordinator to develop programming related to exhibitions and collections that support and enhance the museum’s public programming and audience development strategies.
- Present at least one public lecture or presentation on research or exhibition projects.
- Participate in docent and staff training and museum education.
- Take on special research projects related to the collection.
- Create personal development opportunities to cultivate knowledge of trends and developments in modern and contemporary Art.
- Participate in leadership training with designated members of the museum’s management team and mentoring with the museum’s curators.
- Attend the College Art Association’s Annual Conference.
Required Qualifications
- MA in art history or curatorial studies required.
- Experience working on exhibitions preferred.
- Curiosity about and passion for modern and contemporary Art and artists.
- Highly motivated with aspirations to make a difference in the museum field.
- Strong research background and writing skills.
- Experience working in an office environment.
- Organized, with an ability both to handle multiple projects and see the big picture while managing micro details.
- Ability to adapt to change, identify places where help is required, and take initiative to provide it.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel (including mail merge, creating labels, and databases), as well as image management (Adobe Photoshop, etc.).
