Sophie Davis Curatorial Fellowship for Gender and Racial Parity

The Norton Museum of Art is seeking the Sophie Davis Curatorial Fellowship for Gender and Racial Parity, a three year funded position.

The Fellow reports to the William Randolph Hearst Curator of Education.

The primary responsibilities will be to assist the Education Department in developing programs related to gender and racial parity in the visual arts; engage community members and institutions working on related issues, assist the Development Department in fundraising for related programs, participate in the national dialogue concerning museums and community engagement, report on key developments relating to these issues.

The Fellow will:

  • Act as an advocate and liaison between the Norton Museum of Art and diverse communities in support of the Museum’s effort to serve all communities more effectively;
  • Engage communities through off-site programs, meetings and discussions;
  • Network with region’s cultural and social service agencies to expand awareness of Museum;
  • Explore ways Museum programming can expand to accommodate diverse audiences;
  • Support Art Street Residency program, particularly in relation to participating artists and related community programming;
  • Develop, with education and curatorial colleagues, and manage Museum programs related to diversity;
  • Support the Development Department in fundraising for related initiatives and programs;
  • Assist the Communications Department in promotion of the related initiatives and programs;
  • Participate in the national dialogue on diversity related to museums and represent the Museum at regional and national forums related to diversity and the arts;
  • Develop and implement strategies to evaluate the impact of Museum programs on diverse communities;
  • Provide monthly reports regarding these efforts to the William Randolph Hearst Curator of Education.

Skills:
The successful Fellow has a great capacity for teamwork, among museum staff and volunteers, community members and national colleagues; works well with a multiplicity of communities; has the ability to manage thoughtfully the institutional and community dynamics related to diversity in today’s museums; demonstrates professionalism while connecting authentically with people; has excellent communication skills, demonstrable skills as a writer, and is computer proficient.

Education:
The successful Fellow will have a Master’s Degree in a field related to the position, and 3 to 5 years of experience in museum work; volunteer, intern and/or professional experience will be considered.
