The Art Institute of Chicago seeks a Curatorial Fellow to advance research on photography and moving-image technologies in the Korean Peninsula from the 1900s onward. The Fellow will work closely with the Department of Photography and Media and the Department of Arts of Asia, focusing on artists such as Kim Sooja, Han Youngsoo, and others. The initiative will explore how photography shaped and was shaped by historical events such as colonialism, imperialism, and the Cold War. The Fellow will conduct research in South Korea, build relationships with key stakeholders, and contribute to exhibitions, acquisitions, and publications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on an extensive survey of Korean photographers and media artists.
  • Compile bibliographies and recommend materials for acquisition.
  • Conduct primary research in South Korea, including visits to key institutions like the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
  • Develop proposals for acquisitions, exhibitions, and scholarly presentations.
  • Engage in research and object-related work with curators.
  • Support the development of an edited anthology of Korean-language texts related to the fellowship.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in art history, East Asian studies, film/media studies, or related field.
  • Fluency in Korean (reading, writing, speaking) required; proficiency in Hanja preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of professional or research experience in photography and media history related to Korea.

Compensation:

  • The fellowship includes benefits, a relocation allowance (if applicable), a stipend for research/professional development, and project support funding.
  • The position is for a three-year term, starting between May and September 2025.
