Program Overview
The EMMA-Saastamoinen Curatorial Fellowship Programme, a partnership between EMMA and the Saastamoinen Foundation, invites international curators to Finland for a six-month paid fellowship to gain experience with one of Finland’s most significant collections of contemporary and modern art. This unique opportunity allows curators to engage in research, collaborate with EMMA’s exhibition and collections teams, and build networks within the Finnish art scene.
Fellowship Goals
The program encourages the exchange of curatorial perspectives and practices, supports professional growth, and promotes research. By the end of the fellowship, the selected curator will complete a research article focusing on a specific work, artist, or movement within the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection.
Key Responsibilities and Offerings
- Curatorial Research: In-depth study of the Saastamoinen Foundation Art Collection with support from EMMA’s team.
- Exhibition and Collection Work: Active involvement in exhibition planning and the curatorial renewal of the Dialogues collection exhibition.
- Networking: Develop connections within the Finnish art scene and collaborate with professionals at EMMA.
- Facilities and Support: Includes a workspace, necessary work equipment (laptop, phone), and coverage of travel expenses to and from Finland.
- Residency Support: Assistance with residence permit application if required (EMMA covers the permit cost).
Eligibility and Requirements
- Focus on Contemporary Art: Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in curating and researching contemporary art, particularly within collections.
- Experience: Relevant educational or practical experience in curating and research.
- Research Output: The fellow is expected to produce a research article based on their work with the collection.
- Language Skills: Proficiency in oral and written English.
- Independent and Collaborative Work: Ability to work independently on research and collaboratively with diverse team members.
- International Applicants Only: Open to international candidates; Finnish citizens are not eligible.
Application Process

- Interview Selection: Initial selections will be made in early January 2025.
- Interview Period: Online interviews will take place from January 13 to February 21, 2025.
- Final Decision: The chosen candidate will be notified by February 28, 2025.
