Curatorial Internship

Job Details

Description

About the 12-Month Internship Program

This full-time, 12-month internship offers stipends for recent college graduates pursuing museum careers. Interns receive focused departmental training, participate in fall, spring, and summer lecture series, and get financial support for a research trip related to their field. Monthly activities provide additional exposure to the museum and art fields.

Interns in the Curatorial Department join a larger cohort from various MoMA departments. They receive training in specific museum fields through close work with professional staff, gain familiarity with modern and contemporary art through seminars and discussions, and experience the Museum’s overall workings while understanding museums’ roles in the broader cultural context.

Curatorial Departments Responsibilities

Interns assist with exhibition and collection research, process collection documentation, curate files, archive, and perform other duties. Ideal candidates should have experience and interest in research and writing within Art History or similar fields. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and basic Excel functions is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Candidates must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to multitask.

Placement

Interns will be placed in different curatorial departments based on need, interest, and experience. Applicants may list preferences during the application process but may be considered for other departments. Participating departments include:

  • Architecture & Design
  • Film
  • Media & Performance
  • Painting & Sculpture (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Photography
  • Publications

Multiple vacancies are available.

Required Commitment

The program runs from October 2024 to September 2025 and requires a full-time commitment (Monday-Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm).

Recent graduates of bachelor’s or master’s degree programs are eligible. The Museum encourages candidates from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines to apply. International candidates are also eligible.

As a J-1 visa program sponsor, the Museum provides opportunities for international students and emerging professionals to learn about American museum practices. Supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, MoMA accepts applications from candidates of Greek national origin.

Stipend

The stipend is $42,000 (gross), subject to tax withholdings. Benefits include health coverage, two weeks of paid vacation, and an additional $2,000 for travel expenses related to an approved research trip.
