Mudam, the Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg, is seeking a Curatorial Research Fellow, an initiative supported by Allen & Overy Shearman.
Inaugurated in 2006, in a building designed by the internationally renowned architect leoh Minh Pei, Mudam is the Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg. Our mission is to collect, conserve and present the most relevant contemporary art of our time and to make it accessible to a wide audience. Through our exhibitions, publications, and artistic and educational programmes, we aim to play a leading role in the promotion and understanding of contemporary art.
Situated in Europe at the heart of a cosmopolitan country where 179 nationalities live side by side, it is our wish to speak to all communities and promote their access to contemporary art. We are keen to make the museum a living space, a place of dialogue where the issues of our contemporary society can be addressed and discussed. Your mission
Working as part of the collection and wider curatorial team, your role will be dedicated to the development of the collection through the museum’s partnership with the international law firm, Allen & Overy Shearman. Your research will focus on contemporary art globally with a specific interest in moving image and new technologies. You will contribute ideas and support proposals for acquisitions and may also work on the development of collection displays.
The partnership between Mudam and Allen & Overy Shearman was first established in 2013 and started with a series of donations to Mudam’s collection focusing on artists working with moving image. Since 2019, this collaboration has been strengthened with increased support for acquisitions and the creation of a Curatorial Fellowship to extend this focus to contemporary artists working with moving image and new technologies including digital media.
Your role will involve:
Research / Acquisition proposals
- To research and develop proposals for acquisitions and contribute to the identification of a work to be acquired with support from Allen & Overy Shearman in 2026
- Conduct research on the works in the collection focusing on issues related to moving image and new technologies: situate the works within the history of the medium, identify current challenges, and establish a repository of critical archives on these topics
- To identify significant and emerging artists whose work is engaged with moving image and new technologies including digital media
- To produce detailed dossiers on artists that include biographies, bibliographies and documentation
- To liaise with galleries and artists and in dialogue with the Curator/Collection manager and the Head of Artistic department, identify works, develop and present proposals
- To provide administrative support to the acquisitions process and contribute to presentations, collection and acquisitions meetings as appropriate
- To contribute to the collection databases and records in the museum’s digital and physical archives as required
- To contribute to the ongoing work of the museum in addressing conservation practices related to artworks including moving image and new technologies
- Attending key meetings, making presentations and preparing other documents for Allen & Overy Shearman
Access
- Identify and develop new ways to showcase the works in the collection related to moving image and new technologies
- To contribute to all aspects of developing, planning and delivering of associated collection displays
- To contribute to the development of accessible texts on the collection including acquisition proposals, labels and interpretative texts and materials for press and marketing
- To contribute to the production of scholarly texts for Mudam’s publications via proofreading and fact- checking
- To support the promotion of Mudam’s collection to the public through liaison with the Communications team
- To present Allen & Overy Shearman’s donations to the public during collection display tours
General
- To represent Mudam to partners and at external meetings as requested
- To contribute to the strategic development of the collection and to work as a team to ensure that the department’s missions are fulfilled
Your profile
We are looking for an open-minded and enthusiastic individual, keen to contribute to its development. Suitable candidates will recognise themselves in this description and will be able to offer the following attributes:
- Expertise in contemporary art with proven research skills
- Good administrative and organisational skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Computer literacy
- Fluent in English. A working knowledge of French, German or Luxembourgish is also an advantage.
- A broad knowledge of contemporary art and culture with a particular interest in the impact of moving image and new technologies on contemporary practice.
- Attention to detail
- Ability to manage a varied workload and remain calm under pressure
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
