Rencontres d’Arles Curatorial Research Fellowship 2020

The Rencontres d’Arles is having a €20,000 curatorial research fellowship open to all the exhibition curators.

The chosen project will unfold in two parts:
– research
– followed by an exhibition based on the results.

The €20,000 grant includes:
– €5,000 for research expense and fee.
– €15,000 to produce the exhibition.

RULES OF PARTICIPATION

1 — PURPOSE

The Rencontres d’Arles curatorial research fellowship is intended for curators wishing to produce an unprecedented exhibition project with a relationship to images/photography.
The research and production fellowship is supported by Jean-François Dubos.

2 — APPLICATION

The application must be filed online here.

The file must include the following :

> a biography of the curator(s) (maximum 500 keystrokes), complete with training, research and contact details, and a portfolio (pdf) of various projects the curator has carried out.

> a written presentation of the exhibition project proposed for the fellowship (maximum 5 000 keystrokes, word or pdf), a body of works and a list of the artists envisaged for the project (visuals are strongly recommended, word or pdf), an estimated research budget (€5,000), a research timetable and an estimated exhibition production budget (€15,000 – within the limits of the earmarked amount)

The texts must be in French or English, ideally both.

3 — RESEARCH & PRODUCTION

STAGE 1 — RESEARCH

– Based on the selected project, the curator will receive a €5,000 research grant.

– The budget and schedule will be submitted to the Rencontres d’Arles management team for approval.

– The curator will have six months of research time, after which he will send a note to the Rencontres d’Arles artistic department, which will determine whether the project is feasible and can be organized as an exhibition (stage 2).

STAGE 2 — PRODUCING & ORGANIZING THE EXHIBITION

If approved, the project will enter the production stage, supervised by the Rencontres d’Arles.

> The €15,000 budget, managed by the Rencontres d’Arles, includes:
– loan of works
– round-trip shipping to Arles
– production of the works: prints/frames, wallpaper, videos, etc.
– invitation of the curator and, possibly, artists to Arles during opening week (and/or during the installation).
– insurance
– etc.

> The curator will:
– select the works forming the body of the exhibition after ascertaining that they are free of exhibition and reproduction rights
– draft a text presenting the selection of photographs
– attend the festival’s opening week and participate in the guided tour of the exhibition.

In addition, the Rencontres d’Arles will pay the costs of designing, setting up and taking down the exhibition as well as for providing security.
