Dept-European Paintings-Research Associate
About the Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art collects, studies, conserves, and presents significant works of art across all times and cultures in order to connect people to creativity, knowledge, and ideas.
The Met presents over 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. The Museum lives in two iconic sites in New York City—The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters. Since it was founded in 1870, The Met has always aspired to be more than a treasury of rare and beautiful objects. Every day, art comes alive in the Museum’s galleries and through its exhibitions and events, revealing both new ideas and unexpected connections across time and across cultures.
About the Department
The Met’s celebrated European Paintings collection encompasses more than 2,500 works of art from the thirteenth through the early twentieth century. The collection traces its origins to the Museum’s founding purchase of 174 paintings from European dealers in 1871. Since then, numerous donations, bequests, and curatorial purchases have greatly enriched the department’s holdings. Particularly notable are its rich displays of early Italian and Northern art, its seventeenth-century Dutch paintings, and its galleries of nineteenth-century French paintings, which are second only to the museums of Paris. As it grows, the collection reflects our constantly evolving ideas about art history and offers new opportunities for discovery by the public and scholars alike.
