Detroit Curatorial Seminar: Empowering Emerging BIPOC Curators
The Detroit Curatorial Seminar offers a distinctive opportunity for six Michigan-based BIPOC curators. This initiative, created in partnership with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, spans from November 2023 to April 2024. Developed from ICI’s Curatorial Intensive program, the Curatorial Seminar is an eight-session program designed to empower emerging curators within a single location. It aims to nurture a more personalized curatorial approach, elevate underrepresented artists, and foster engagement with local art communities outside of institutional settings. Participants will have the chance to transform their ideas into exhibition or project proposals, guided by hand-picked mentors with a unique perspective on their curatorial practice. Ultimately, this seminar seeks to establish a supportive network of peers who share common values and facilitate the exchange of knowledge among early-career curators.
Seminar Overview
The Detroit Seminar is structured around three two-day workshops hosted at the Wright Museum. These workshops, facilitated by ICI and Wright staff, guest curators, and industry professionals (including a fundraising consultant), will delve into theoretical and curatorial case studies while providing practical logistical training. Participants will refine their exhibition and project proposals through mutual feedback and individual mentorship sessions tailored to their specific needs. The program also includes group readings, studio visits, and site visits to encourage collaboration among curators. The seminar concludes with a trip to Chicago in April 2024, allowing participants to meet their counterparts from the Chicago Curatorial Seminar and attend the Curatorial Forum programming.
