Digital Curator
C/O Berlin Foundation is a nonprofit foundation that presents a cultural program of international standing. As an exhibition space for photography, C/O Berlin shows the works of acclaimed artists, supports emerging talents, and accompanies children, young people, and adults on visual journeys of discovery through our visual culture. Rigorous educational work, a rich offering of educational programs, and close collaboration with museums and institutions all over the world make C/O Berlin a unique center of cultural exchange.
For the planned digital expansion of its program of exhibitions and events, and to augment and support its curatorial team, C/O Berlin is announcing the position of Digital Curator, first as a freelance position from July to December 2021, with the option of full-time employment starting in 2022.
Responsibilities
- Identifying and defining a virtual exhibition area and its potential uses for the curatorial work of C/O Berlin
- Developing a strategy to expand the analog exhibitions with a digital program
- Creating an efficient infrastructure for implementing the digital program (including staff, technical aspects, and finances)
- Scholarly research and evaluation of current developments and possibilities in the area of digital art
- Commissioning and managing digital art projects
- Developing an accompanying educational program for digital projects
- Building and cultivating an international art and cultural studies network with a focus on digital visual culture
- Researching and proposing funding options for individual projects
Requirements
- University degree in the area of media art, cultural and visual studies, or equivalent knowledge and experience
- Sound understanding of the latest digital developments in the area of lens-based media, and familiarity with relevant cultural debates and theoretical discourse
- Professional experience in commissioning and managing image-based digital projects using virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer-generated imagery
- Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of current technical standards in the digital sector
- Working knowledge of copyrights regarding photographic images in digital applications
- Excellent scholarly command of German and/or English
- Good personal network in the world of digital art
- Scheduling flexibility for completing deadline-driven workflow
- Remote working is possible
C/O Berlin offers the greatest possible curatorial, scholarly, and organizational freedom to applicants for the listed freelance position during the period from July to December 2021. The workload and salary will be negotiated between C/O Berlin and applicants according to their availability and professional competence. Starting in 2022 there is the option of part- or full-time employment.
