Kunstverein München e.V. is seeking a new director (m/f/d) to lead one of Germany’s most prestigious contemporary art institutions. The new director will succeed Maurin Dietrich, whose successful tenure concludes on December 31, 2025. This full-time leadership position begins on January 1, 2026, for a negotiable five-year term.
Founded in 1823, Kunstverein München supports a diverse range of artistic practices and has garnered national and international recognition for its dynamic exhibitions, critical programming, and community engagement. With over 2,200 members and a strong local and global presence, the institution is a central force in Munich’s art scene, alongside major institutions such as Haus der Kunst and Pinakothek der Moderne.
About the Position
- Devise and lead the artistic program independently, including exhibitions, commissions, and events
- Plan and manage the institution’s budget in collaboration with the Head of Administration and Treasurer
- Oversee the team to realize artistic and membership programs
- Produce all institutional communications, including press, digital media, and publications
- Build relationships with artists, galleries, institutions, and funders locally and internationally
- Develop the Kunstverein’s archive, including digitalization and research publication
- Engage with educational initiatives such as workshops, tours, and masterclasses with art academies
Eligibility
- Proven curatorial experience including production, contracts, loans, and installations
- Outstanding communication skills, with experience in public speaking
- Deep knowledge of contemporary art and strong international network
- Experience managing budgets and overseeing administrative operations and fundraising
- Background in contemporary visual arts programming
- Experience developing public and member programming, including international travel
- Fluency in English; German proficiency is a plus (learning German is required)
- Commitment to the values and statutes of Kunstverein München
- Willingness to live and work in Munich
