About the Role
The Tauranga Art Gallery Trust is seeking an experienced arts professional to become the next Director of Toi Tauranga Art Gallery.
The Director will shape the Gallery’s overall creative vision while ensuring an entrepreneurial, cost-effective operation and a proactive organisational culture.
The successful candidate will lead and inspire the Gallery’s team to deliver dynamic exhibitions, education initiatives and public programmes. They will also build strategic relationships with communities, mana whenua, government, businesses and organisations across the arts, tourism and education sectors.
The appointment comes at an important moment for the Gallery, with the major Te Manawataki o Te Papa cultural precinct development currently underway.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should have:
- A postgraduate qualification in art history, fine arts, arts management or a relevant discipline.
- A successful record of management within an arts institution.
- Curatorial expertise or other relevant professional skills.
- Established networks in New Zealand, the Asia-Pacific region or internationally.
- Experience leading and motivating a team to deliver exhibitions, education and public programmes.
- An innovative and entrepreneurial approach.
- Strong commercial judgement.
- The confidence and ability to secure investment and support from different stakeholders.
- Experience developing and sustaining key strategic relationships.

- Local and central government.
- Businesses.
- Arts organisations and professionals.
- Tourism bodies.
- Educational institutions and other partners.
About Toi Tauranga Art Gallery
Toi Tauranga Art Gallery is one of New Zealand’s newest and most respected regional public galleries.
Since opening in 2007, it has presented diverse visual art experiences designed to engage, inspire, challenge and educate its audiences. The Gallery completed a two-year capital upgrade between 2023 and 2025.
Together, the Gallery, retail store and café welcome more than 100,000 visitors annually. Its curatorial team also collaborates with other institutions to develop touring programmes presented throughout New Zealand and at selected venues in Australia.
