Director, Artspace (Sydney Australia)

  • One of the leading institutions for the production and presentation of contemporary art in the Asia Pacific
  • Ever changing, ever challenging – Artspace is where audiences encounter the artists and the ideas of our times
  • Exceptional opportunity for a visionary and creative leader to build on a strong and vibrant legacy

Established in 1983, Artspace is a leading independent, not-for-profit contemporary art space in the Asia Pacific.

Located on Gadigal land on the shores of Sydney Harbour, Artspace is a contemporary art space, cultural partner, community resource, and advocate for artists, curators, writers and other cultural practitioners. Our founding purpose – to support the production and presentation of contemporary art – remains central to everything we do.

From inception, Artspace has embraced risk, experimentation and collaboration, supporting Australian and international artists of all generations, from emerging through to established, to pursue new directions and make their most ambitious works to date.

Centred on our completely revitalised contemporary art space at The Gunnery that reopened in 2023 following over $15 million of investment from the NSW Government, and underpinned by an exclusive 35-year sublease on the entire building,  Artspace is a meeting place for audiences and communities to participate in a wide range of public programs, learning and outreach initiatives, and cultural events, introducing them to new ideas, practices and ways of thinking.

Extending out from our physical location, Artspace is a nexus point for critical thinking and dialogue in which contemporary art is contextualised within social and political histories, present-day issues and events, and progressive agendas that are important to our communities.

As a public institution, we understand the position we hold within our local ecology. We are partners with peer organisations and contribute to cultural diplomacy, learning, social opportunity, and will continue to develop initiatives that enable the organisation to look outward and build relationships in our communities.

Reporting to the Board and leading a team of 10 people, the Director leads the organisation and all its programs and activities at an exciting time.  We have a strong base: a great team, a new building, a refreshed Board, renewed and increased multi-year funding agreements from Government, and a vibrant community of philanthropic supporters.

Artspace has a forty-year tradition of finding and growing new generations of Australian artists, who support and inspire us in turn.  We are looking for our next Director whose vision, passion and energy can show us the future.
