
DIRECTOR/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Amazwi South African Museum of Literature is a Schedule 3A national public entity governed by the Cultural Institutions Act, Act No. 119 of 1998, as amended, and the Public Finance Management Act, Act No. 1 of 1999, as amended. It operates under the jurisdiction of a Council appointed by the Minister of Arts and Culture.
The Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Museum and an Accounting Officer in terms of the Public Finance Management Act, Act No. 1 of 1999, as amended. The Director is appointed by the Council and reports to the Council, which is a statutory body appointed by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The Museum invites applications from suitably qualified, committed, competent, and experienced South Africans to serve as Director. This is an opportunity to help create a caring value driven institution of knowledge and excellence. The successful individual will be based in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.
The Director will lead the development of a long-term vision and sustainable strategic direction for the museum. The Director will be the key advocate for the museum, required to influence a wide range of stakeholders including government, educational institutions, funders, communities, and international organisations. The building of collaborative relationships to support the organisation’s continued success and development in the years ahead will be an essential component of the roles.
The successful candidate must have an impressive track record of providing effective leadership for a complex organisation operating in the literature and indigenous languages sector. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate experience or capability of providing strategic advice and guidance to the Council, as well as developing and delivering successful stakeholder engagement. Experience in driving forward innovative change programmes will also be a key prerequisite.
The incumbent will be responsible for leading a management team and reporting to the Council.
Minimum requirements:
- Post-graduate degree in Business or Public Administration or Heritage studies. A relevant Doctorate will be an added advantage.
- Relevant qualification
- At least 10 years of experience in a senior managerial position of which 5 should be at the middle or senior management level in a similar environment.
- Excellent skills in lateral and critical thinking, conflict and crisis management, negotiations, communications, presentation, and interpersonal relationships
- Proficiency in understanding and applying PFMA and Treasury Regulations and other relevant laws, Acts, and regulatory frameworks, as well as good corporate governance and practices.
- Good networking ability in similar industries, the public sector, tertiary institutes, and other related parties
- Extensive local experience in the museum or literature sector (international experience will be an added advantage)
- Demonstrates leadership values.
- A valid driver’s license is essential.
