Director of Exhibition Design and Production – MIT Museum, Cambridge, MA

Salary range: $120,440 – $163,200 per year

The MIT Museum is seeking a Director of Exhibition Design and Production to lead the planning, design, and production of all exhibitions, including permanent, temporary, and traveling shows, across the MIT Museum’s flagship and satellite galleries. This senior role reports to the Museum Director and manages interdisciplinary teams while collaborating closely with curators, education, collections, and communications teams to deliver high-quality, inclusive, visitor-centered experiences.

Role Highlights

  • Lead exhibition planning, development, production, installation, and evaluation

  • Develop long-term strategic plans for exhibitions and gallery rotations

  • Manage budgets, timelines, and cross-department projects

  • Supervise exhibition teams and external contributors (designers, fabricators, installers)

  • Support fundraising, marketing, and documentation for exhibitions

  • Oversee traveling exhibitions and loaned shows

  • Ensure all exhibitions align with MIT Museum mission and institutional priorities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in design or related field

  • 7–10 years of nationally or internationally recognized exhibition experience

  • Proven expertise in exhibition design, multimedia displays, and museum presentation standards

  • Strong project management and leadership skills, including budget and team oversight

  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and external partners

  • Availability for occasional evenings, weekends, and ~10% national/international travel

Preferred

  • Experience managing multi-million-dollar exhibition projects

  • Experience connecting science, art, and design in exhibitions

  • Interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
