We have an excellent opportunity for a Director of Exhibitions, within the Visual Arts team at the British Council based in London, reporting directly to Emma Dexter, Director of Visual Arts, to lead the British Council’s exhibitions work globally, developing a range of projects in collaboration with UK organisations to meet their ambitions to work internationally, and meeting the British Council’s capacity and legacy building objectives, while ensuring that all projects and exhibitions reflect the diversity, range and excellence of the UK’s visual arts and museum sector.
The successful candidate must have:
- Extensive in-depth knowledge of 20th and 21st century British art and the international and UK museums and galleries sector. At least ten years experience of: the management and delivery of complex international collaborations /touring exhibitions and/or touring exhibition programmes, related budgets, project management and team management, income generation via exhibition fees and/or fundraising, and of working in partnership with multiple agencies and stakeholders.
Some of the main opportunities and challenges will include:
- Playing a leading role in the process of re-defining how British Council Exhibitions and the Visual Arts team meet the needs of both the UK visual arts and museum sector and the capacity and legacy building objectives of the Council’s overseas developmental work by ensuring that our international touring exhibitions programme promotes and supports international working by UK institutions. Additionally this role will lead the department’s advisory work on international touring for the UK Museums and Galleries Sector, by developing and sharing expertise.
- Developing and implementing an overarching business model for both the Art and Architecture Venice Biennales and the British Pavilion, including the introduction of a Venice Fellowship programme in collaboration with the UK Higher Education Sector, a rolling 3 year budget and sponsorship and fundraising objectives.
- In close collaboration with Director Visual Arts leads the re-shaping of the exhibitions team and its programme to achieve the above outcomes and incorporate it into an overarching end to end process which will include planning and evaluation, budgets, fundraising and income generation, diversity, matrix working and market research.
- Explore and implement new avenues of funding, programming and partnerships, to include a mixed economy funding model for all exhibitions and leading the development of exhibition wraparound activities such as skills training and education tools, while maintaining the quality and reputation for excellence of British Council exhibitions.
