Director of Exhibitions – Munch Museum

Edvard Munch’s art is Norway’s greatest contribution to art history. As keeper of the majority of Munch’s works, the Munch Museum holds a unique position within the international art world. The Museum, which also includes the Stenersen Museum, is run by the City of Oslo. The Museum’s main task is to manage its collections through conservation, research and exhibitions. The Munch Museum will be moving to a new museum building by the waterfront of Oslo in 2018.
The Department of Exhibitions and Collections makes sure that both venues of the museum (Munch and Stenersen) maintain a strong and relevant exhibition programme on a high professional and artistic level. The department ensures that the Munch Museum is the leading institution for research on Munch’s art, utilising the museum’s collections, database, archive and research library as essential resources. The Munch Museum engages in research cooperation with leading international museums and universities.
We now have an opening for the position as director of this department.
Assignments
Artistic, administrative and financial management of the Department of Exhibitions and Collections, which comprises the museum’s staff of art historians and curators.
General responsibility for the museum’s collections.
Chief curatorial responsibility for the exhibition programme at both venues, as well as collaborative projects out of house and loans.
Chief responsibility for developing the art historical research strategies of the museum, including collaboration with the University of Oslo and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design.
Chief supervision of the department’s personnel and budget.
Participation in planning and supervising the construction of the new Munch Museum.
Report directly to the Museum Director and is part of his executive team.
Qualifications
We are looking for applicants with Ph.D in Art History or similar background.
You must have comprehensive knowledge of late 19th- and early 20th-century modernism, in particular Edvard Munch’s art, as well as a strong understanding of contemporary art.
You should have extensive experience from art museums or another art institution.
You must have considerable experience as a curator.
You should have experience in organisational leadership.
